John Madejski Academy

Combined Cadet Force

Here at JMA we are proud to offer the opportunity to join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF).

The Combined Cadet Force is a national organisation, which exists primarily in schools. It exists to give its members military skills, adventurous training and qualities of leadership within the safety of a formal and controlled structure.

It is possible to have sections from all three major arms of H.M. Forces: The Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force. At John Madejski Academy we have an Army Section linked to the Coldstream Guards. Joining is a decision which students will not regret and is open to all students aged 13-18. The CCF is jointly financed by grants from the Army under the Cadet Expansion programme.

The CCF here is completely voluntary. Since each member of the CCF receives substantial training and equipment, we require students to stay with us for at least one year and preferably until they complete their proficiency training after two-three years. Although joining the CCF is voluntary, as a member you will be expected to attend every parade. The programme of activities is progressive and this is not viable unless attendance is consistent. The CCF at JMA meets regularly every Thursday during term time from 3.15pm. until 5.15pm.

As with every successful organisation, there are rules and regulations, which have to be observed. In the CCF you will rely heavily on your common sense and you can expect there to be repercussions if you fail to meet the expected standards. The CCF is a military organisation; serving Regular Officers and NCOs visit us and we visit Regular units and training areas. Cadets are expected to keep their uniform clean and tidy.

Throughout the school year, students are encouraged to take part in weekend activities including orienteering, shooting, sailing and field craft training. Each year there is an annual camp and all students are encouraged to attend, enhancing both their learning experiences and potential for promotion within their service. In addition to the training programmes, students participate in a number of CCF competitions national and international. But don’t take our word for it see here for more

The CCF Charter

"The broad function of the Combined Cadet Force is to provide a disciplined organisation within a school so that boys and girls may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance, and a sense of service to the community. It is firmly believed that the self-discipline required in Service life are equally important in the civil life of the nation today."
